Khandallah Park

Khandallah Park is the unofficial home of Muddy Toes and we have sessions here more often than anywhere else. It's no coincidence that it has literally everything that you need for the most magical morning out. The stream trickles gently through the park, shallow enough to paddle and to adventure upstream if you're feeling brave! Look closely and you'll find koura in the stream and the birdlife is next level - think colourful kereru, friendly piwakawaka, chattering tui and groups of kaka flying overhead. There are heaps of tracks around the park, leading to the summit of Mt Kaukau if you're looking for an easy(ish) hike! For our sessions we stay mostly on the flat, exploring some of the bushland that borders wide green, open spaces as well as checking out the fun playground which has something for everyone.

Matairangi Nature Trail,
Mt Victoria

The Matairangi Nature Trail at the top of Mount Victoria is an epic place for a true Welly adventure - go for the jaw-dropping views of the city, then entertain the kids by following the trail of activity stations based on the habitat of the matuku hūrepo, kapokapowai, tuna, moko pirirākau, wētā, pekapeka, titiwai, tītipounamu and kōura.

Otari Wilton's Bush

Otari Wilton's Bush is a gem amongst Wellington's green spaces, with ancient rainforest sitting neatly alongside manicured lawns, native plants and heaps of natural play features to explore. We love our sessions that start at the Troup lawn, which is a flat open space with toilets, a drinking fountain, BBQs, benches and a covered shelter. A shallow stream runs alongside the lawn where you can see friendly ducks and the resident longfin eels, which often hang out under the bridge across the water. We love the safe, flat access to the stream, the steep bank at the back of the lawn which offers opportunities for climbing, building huts and imaginative play. On rainy days we love to meet in the Fernery, where NZ's famous ferns offer an area with abundant natural shelter under the canopy. This is the perfect spot for a game of hide and seek or a nature scavenger hunt, and even a short walk around this area presents fallen trees, mushrooms, vines and interesting plants to see.

Petone Beach

Petone Beach is our beach day favourite, not least due to the large number of natural treasures that wash up on the shores - think driftwood, shells, crabs and more! There are always materials to build and create. The water here is safe: calm and shallow, and clear enough to see the bottom, so perfect for a paddle on a warm day - and, let's face it, on cooler days too. We always recommend bringing a towel and change of clothes as Muddy Toes kids just can't help themselves! Our Thursday morning spot is near the end of Bay St, which is perfectly situated near both toilets and a coffee cart, with lots of parking available too.

Percy's Scenic Reserve

This Hutt Valley delight is a super spot for a morning in nature - our spot is right at the bottom of a grassy bank surrounded by giant trees with gnarly roots, with a shallow stream for water play and the option of a short hike up the trail to see a magnificent waterfall. Our first session here was such a hit that we had to add it to the roster of regular locations!

Plimmerton Beach

Plimmerton Beach has everything that you want from a beach day - golden sands, a stream for safe water play, gentle surf and the most glorious views out to Mana Island.

Willowbank Reserve

Willowbank Reserve is a Tawa classic, this is a spot for some serious fun! The playground (currently due for an upgrade, although we love it as it is!) offers challenge for all ages and is surrounded by luscious greenery - a huge lawn, with heritage fruit trees, flowering bushes (plenty of fallen petals to use for potions during spring/summer!) and a river running through offering opportunities for water play - close supervision is recommended here for younger children as the water is deep in places, and is fast flowing after rain. Never fear - there are some safe shallow spots too. The river is also teeming with eels - unfortunately feeding them here is no longer permitted.
