Frequently Asked Questions

My inbox is often pinging with the same questions, so here are the answers to some of the questions that I am asked the most often...

What age children is Muddy Toes suitable for?
All ages! If you're happy to spend a few hours outside with your little one, we're happy to have you. We have caregivers attending with babes in front packs through to older preschoolers, and everything in between. We believe that there is no child too young to benefit from regular time in nature.

My child naps in the morning so we can't make it at 9.30 - can I come later?
Yes! The sessions are very informal and you are welcome to come later if that's what works for your family. Our sessions typically run until 11.30.

Can I bring my dog?
We know that your dogs are a much loved part of the family but please leave them at home if you're coming to our sessions, even if we're running at a dog-friendly site. We want all of our playgroup kids to be as relaxed and safe as possible at our playgroup and not all children (or adults!) are super comfortable with pups around.

It is raining/freezing cold - will the session still run?

We aim to run in all conditions, although in very extreme weather where we decide that it poses a risk to safety we will sometimes cancel - we'll try to post a cancellation notice on the original post by 8.30am. Some of our very best sessions have been when the rain has been pouring - there is so much to learn and experience in all weathers. We encourage all of our families to invest in wet weather gear for both children and adults to make all-weather play possible - we do have some loan sets too, so that you can try before you buy. We try and choose locations which offer natural shelter under the tree canopy, or opportunities for shelter building - it adds another level of fun and adventure!

What should I dress my child in for Muddy Toes during winter?

For little ones, layers are best - wool as a base layer is great especially if they get wet as it'll still keep them warm. However for really chilly days I always try and add a layer of polar fleece and a really great waterproof jacket and pants or overalls. 2 pairs of socks, ideally a wool pair at the bottom is essential under gumboots. And a really warm hat too.
When looking at rainwear, look for waterproof (seam sealed) and not water resistant, otherwise the water seeps through in heavy downpours.
My biggest recommendation is to think carefully about what you wear too! It's easy to forget ourselves and if we get wet/cold we tend to project that onto our kids and take them home earlier. On cold days I wear a merino base layer, fleece and down jacket on top, plus thermals under my trousers, and waterproof overpants. Plus tall gumboots with two pairs of wool socks! I also add gloves and a hat. If I'm snug then I know I can let the kids play for longer, and it's easy enough to take off a layer if needed.

If you ever want more information or recommendations speak to your session facilitator who can give you some more tailored suggestions.
Do I have to come every week?

There is no obligation to come every week. However, the children who have attended regularly do tend to get the most out of sessions - they understand how sessions work, they become familiar with the environment, grow connections with each other and become comfortable with the adults - which gives us a chance to connect every now and then too! Even if your child is unsure when they first start coming, give it a few weeks and they'll quickly grow in confidence

What if I can't pay?
We know that times are tough at the moment so if payment is an issue please get in touch and let me know, so that I know that you're still planning to join us! We would never want anyone to miss out because we are a paid activity.
