There's a lot to say about mindset in continuing to adventure in all weathers and sometimes it does take a lot of effort to get on out there, even when the Wellington wind is howling and the rain is coming down. The thing is, though, if you start taking your kids outdoors whatever the weather when they're little, they won't ever see it as 'bad' weather - just an opportunity to jump in puddles and dance in the rain....
One of the things that I have found absolutely key to a positive attitude towards getting outside in all weathers is the mindful use of language - it takes a concerted effort but try not calling it 'bad weather' or 'terrible rain' as kids will pick up on this straight away - instead, what about "It's cold outside so we'd better wear our jackets today!" or even just "it's raining heavily". Use descriptive, rather than emotive language.

We love the cooler, wetter months here at Muddy Toes Playgroup, and our sessions are still run in the same way, filled with child-led play and exploration. There is so much to learn from being immersed in nature: the feel of rain on your face, how the ground feels different underfoot after a storm, how the stream looks different after weeks of hot, dry weather - these are things that children notice when they experience them firsthand.
Practically speaking - on rainy days we always try to put up a shelter so that there’s somewhere dry for the children to have their snack and to keep everyone's bags dry. On chillier days we bring a stack of warm blankets to snuggle up under for a story and a hot drink. And you've heard me say it a hundred times - great gear is key!

It's so important to role model to our kids that it's OK to play in all weathers - and the best way to encourage this is by appropriate clothing for the conditions:
Waterproof jacket - we love the amazing range by Therm which are also machine washable and can be thrown in the tumble dryer - game changer!
Waterproof pants or overalls - I swear by the cheap and cheerful Pakka range from Mountain Warehouse, which have kept me dry on many an outing. There are heaps of great options for kids. For crawlers and new walkers, waterproof (avoid 'water resistant' if you can) coveralls are a great option to avoid any water ingress between top and bottoms.
Warm layers underneath - they can be taken off if necessary!
Comfy, well-fitting gumboots to keep little feet warm and dry
Double socks and/or sheepskin gumboot liners
I would also add a warm hat if it was a cooler day.
Note that this clothing applies to kids and their caregivers - I always add an extra layer for myself as I know I get cold and will be able to let the kids play for longer if I'm toasty!
Great waterproofs and warm layers for everyone mean that you will be comfortable and able to relax in any conditions. We have a few spare sets of waterproof gear so if you want to come along but are feeling ill-equipped then please reach out - I’m always happy to help.

We always see lower attendance during winter because sickness is higher but remember - being out in the rain and colder weather won’t make you sick (it’s more likely that little ones will pick up those winter bugs being in indoor environments where they spread more quickly!), particularly if you’re prepared. Do expect to need a change of clothes - we love our fantastic Lilla Bean wet bags for getting muddy, wet gear home. And remember -
no child ever got so muddy that they couldn’t get clean again (although mine have tried!!)!
